PhD-Positions in the area of

Thermal Conversion of Biomass for CO2-neutral Generation of Power

The University of Luxemburg within its multi-disciplinary and –cultural environment offers PhD-positions in the area of utilisation of biomass for power generation. Biomass either as a single fuel or as a co-fuel offers a substantial potential for CO2-reduction as compared to natural gas or oil-based fossil fuels. As a complementary part to experimental investigations, numerical models and simulations offer a deeper insight into the variety of processes such as thermal decomposition or combustion. Work is to be started and continued from an already available software-system describing all major processes during thermal degradation of solid fuels. Thus, in close cooperation with industry guidelines for the design of both processes and plants will be derived for later applications.

Expectations:

The successful candidate is expected:

· To develop and implement models describing the conversion of biomass fuels

· To validate these models with experimental results

· To set-up and run simulations coupled to 3-dimensional CFD representing technical applications

· To interpret and document results in a PhD-thesis

Requirements:

Candidates should have a Master/Diploma degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or equivalent. This should ideally be complemented by the following skills or could be acquired:

· Knowledge of thermo- and fluiddynamics

· Knowledge of chemistry and reaction systems

· Mathematics and numerics

· Object-oriented programming in particular C++

· One of the working languages: English, German or French

· Willingness to work in an inter-cultural environment

These theses can be managed either autonomously by the University of Luxembourg or in conjunction with a co-supervisor who is also authorised to manage research resulting from a foreign research institution. The university can offer doctorates in chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, informatics, science. Among other amenities the position includes an enumeration of app. 2000 €.
